How to Create your Website...

1. Go to wix.com

2. Create an account. You’ll need an email address and password.

3. Choose a template.

Wix will narrow selections into categories for what type of site you’d like to create.  As you click on one type in the left hand column, it will give you more choices in the right.   You can always change this and view other options or, if you’ve got no clue what type of page would work best, you can also select to "view all templates" below the right hand box. You can click on and explore all of the templates until you find one you like.  Keep in mind that you can make changes in color, layout, etc. later as you adapt it to make it your own.

  • Things to consider while choosing your template…

  • Price: Free! Below each template it will indicate if it is free or not, many are but not all.

  • Html 5: Above many of the templates you will notice a red and white symbol with a 5 in it, this indicates it is html 5 based not Flash so it will work with Apple products (iPhones, iPads, etc.)

  • Design: you want a website that shows off your photos and doesn’t overshadow them. Think about simplicity and good design.

    • DO NOT use stock photos on your website (stock images are photo already loaded onto the website from Wix or other images that you pull from the internet). Only use photos that are your own work.

4. Once you have found a template you like, click the "edit" button (it's blue) or, if you are in template view, a blue button at the top that says "edit this site."

5. Watch the video editing tutorial.  This is a great basic video that shows you how to edit and publish your site.  Here are the basics… click in any area to edit, to switch pages click on the icon that looks like a page with a folded corner, save button is at the top, publish and your page is viewable by others.

6. Save frequently.  It can be very frustrating to lose your work.  Save often.  Please note: your site will not be “live” until you chose to publish it.  Once you publish, you can still make changes.  They will also give you your website address so write it down or copy it so you don’t forget it!  Each time you re-enter your site to make changes you will need to republish before those changes go live.

What you need to include on your website:

-A homepage with your name on it and any other information you want to include.

-All images from this semester with titles and dates. Organize them however you would like but remember that design and layout are important.  Keep it simple to highlight your work.

-Any images from previous photo classes (under a separate tab) or a sampling of your digital work (also under a separate tab).

-An artist statement. Usually about 2 paragraphs will cover what you need to get across to the viewer about your photos. You should include some of the following talking points: your experience as a photographer, your artistic choices for shoots and compositions, your point of view as an artist, what challenges you may have had (technically and/or creatively), how you have grown as an artist (technically and/or creatively), what your future photography interests are…etc…etc…
